About
With Mabon, we celebrate the autumn equinox. We're now truly on our way into the darker half of the year. Berries and fruits are ready to be harvested, and the theme is very much about celebrating the harvest we're bringing in, giving thanks, preparing for winter, and being together. This year, I'm using the theme of The Hobbit, which means it will be a mix of ceremony and entertainment for all ages.
Important themes are:
Harvest and Abundance: This is perhaps the most important tradition. The autumn equinox marks the end of the harvest season, when you gather what you've grown throughout the summer. It's a time to celebrate nature's generosity and prepare for winter.
The Balance of Light and Dark: Just like the hobbits in the Shire, many cultures appreciate the small, good things in life, like the warmth of a bonfire and good friends. The autumn equinox represents the balance between the bright summer and the dark winter.
Gathering and Community: The event will be a modern version of gathering to share food, music, and stories. I think it's incredibly important in these times that people can come together to share good experiences and create new memories.
The hobbits' love for food, celebration, and nature fits perfectly with the values of the autumn equinox:
A Hobbit Feast for Autumn: Think of the parties in the Shire, with long tables full of food, drink, and happy, hobbit-like activities.
Food and Drink: The plan is to serve simple, rustic dishes that the hobbits would have appreciated. We will also be actively asking local food producers if they would like to contribute.
Games and Fun: We're organizing ring toss, pumpkin decorating to make hobbit houses (for children), solving riddles, storytelling, building a labyrinth, and we're organizing a local mushroom foraging trip!
Entertainment: There will be live music with a harp, as well as folk music that gives a feeling of being in the Shire! It's going to be incredibly cozy!
Emphasis on Joy: The focus on entertainment, games, and fun aligns perfectly with the hobbits' view of life. They loved celebrating birthdays and other occasions with feasts, singing, and dancing. The party is intended to be a breath of fresh air and a little break from the worries of today and the world, and I hope this can become an annual tradition!
The event is also for those who are interested in a more animistic approach to life and want to learn about the old traditions from those who came before us and were more in touch with nature. We are a respectful and inclusive place that wants to celebrate life.
